As the "Gateway to Williston Lake", Canada's
largest man-made lake, Mackenzie the town is a
mere thirty-eight years old, but the history of the
site dates back to 1793 to its namesake,
Scottish explorer Alexander Mackenzie.

Mackenzie's serene location in the Northern Rocky Mountain Trench, at the southern end of Williston Lake, provides access to a plethora of year-round outdoor recreation activities. Morfee Lake, on the east side of Mackenzie, provides excellent swimming, boating, water skiing and hiking all within five minutes from downtown. Remarkable snow conditions transform the Mackenzie area into a snowmobile and downhill ski paradise (Powder King Mountain Resort - 40 minutes away).
Mackenzie also boasts 32 km of groomed cross-country ski trails. The natural unspoiled wilderness provides ample opportunity for hiking, mountain biking, camping, wildlife viewing and photography.

Natural campsites dot the landscape near Mackenzie.
A municipal campground with washroom/ shower and sani-dump is located at the entrance to town and a wheelchair accessible campground is located on the banks of Williston Lake.
